DOUBLE BELLE
Mit Belle de jour von Luis Bunuel zeigt CROSSING EUROPE erstmals in seiner Geschichte einen älteren Film. Den Grund dafür liefert der portugiesische Regisseur Manoel de Oliveira, der mit Belle toujours eine Weitererzählung des Klassikers gedreht hat, die den von Bunuel geführten Erzählfaden 30 Jahre später aufnimmt und Michel Piccoli erneut brillieren lässt.

Zwei Filme des CROSSING EUROPE-Programmes von heute sind innerhalb der Grenzen der ehemaligen Sowjetunion angesiedelt und haben mehr oder weniger direkt mit ihrem historischen Erbe zu tun. Masha Novikova skizziert in Three Comrades (Niederlande 2006, 99 Minuten), wie der Untergang der Sowjetunion, Tschetscheniens Kampf um Unabhängigkeit und der sich hinziehende Krieg die Leben der Menschen beeinflussen.

Miroslav Dembiniski porträtiert in der Lekcja Bialruskiego/A Lesson of Belorussian (Polen 2006, 53 Minuten) die jugendlichen Oppositionellen Weißrusslands, die mutig und unter hohem persönlichen Einsatz Widerstand gegen die letzte Diktatur Europas leisten.

The reason for this is provided by the Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira, who has created with Belle toujours a continuation of the classic film, taking up the narrative thread started by Bunuel thirty years later and providing an opportunity for a brilliant performance by Michel Piccoli once again.

BELARUS AND CHECHNYA
Two films in today's CROSSING EUROPE programme are set within the borders of the former Soviet Union and relate more or less directly to its historical legacy. In Three Comrades (Netherlands 2006, 99 minutes), Masha Novikova sketches out how the fall of the Soviet Union, Chechnya's fight for independence and the long drawn-out war influence people's lives. It starts with the story of three friends who spend their youth in Chechen city of Grozny until the bombardment of the city by the Russian army in 1994.
